Nobody: New Intro

Malex: Hey everybody! Alex Markley here, hosting episode 16 of The Malex Minute. Today, we have a very special guest on the air with us: Brian DeLay, the famous magician!

Brian: Um...

Malex: Ah, there I go, seeing into the future again. Pardon me, folks. Brian DeLay is only somewhat famous, but with talent like his, that's sure to change! I'm very excited to have you here, Brian.

Brian: And I'm really excited to be here! I listen to the show pretty regularly, and I've been really looking forward to meeting Snufflefungus and Linus!

Malex: Oh. Hmm...

Brian: Where are they, anyway?

Malex: Well, they said they were going to the grocery store, but it's been a week, and they haven't come back yet...

Brian: What? That... doesn't really sound good.

Malex: Also, I'm a fugitive now. The big men with clubs have a premium service 100% money-back policy if they don't deliver the video of me getting my face bashed in.

Brian: You managed to escape?

Malex: Yeah, it was a long and deadly chase. You should have seen it.

Brian: Sounds pretty crazy.

Malex: So anyway... You ready for the interview?

Brian: Whenever you are...

Malex: Well I gotta know what set you on the path to being a magician. Honestly, that's not the sort of thing you picture most kids aspiring to. Astronaut magician-in-space, perhaps, but the regular kind?

Brian: I dunno, I would imaging that levitation tricks might be a little boring in space.

Malex: True enough. So you've convinced me that we need regular, earth-bound magicians. So what inspired you to choose this largely-untrodden path?

Brian: I have a lot of inspirations. When I was young there was a lot of magicians on TV and my parents took me to see Lance Burton live. That was pretty big. Also when I was young I didn't like being told I couldn't do something. Magic gave me the opportunity to do things that normally couldn't be done.

Malex: What about your tricks? I mean, which trick is your current favorite?

Brian: I don't really have a favorite, but I do have some tricks that I use more than others. Ghost card, Levitations, Las Vegas leaper and Coin in soda.

Malex: Are you always on the lookout for new material, or are you pretty comfortable with your current repertoire?

Brian: I think new material is important. People need to see new magic, not necessarily new tricks but new ways of performing the tricks, or we're going to get another one of those masked magicians revealing all our secrets. Grr.

Malex: Hmm... Is that a problem? Does that happen often?

Brian: I'm sure you remember about ten years ago that guy came out, revealing a bunch of the tricks... There were a lot of unhappy magicians.

Malex: Oh... Well, I don't remember that. I'll take your word for it though. So, do you ever develop your own tricks from scratch? What can you tell us about that process?

Brian: I'm currently working on a few new tricks that I'm making from scratch that will both be used on little Internet episodes that I'm trying to make. The process is a lot like trying to create a dance: first you brainstorm ideas, then you produce them, then choreographing. And, finally, the most painful part: magician observance. Where you perform your trick in front of other magicians and they give their input.

Malex: What about the people who are closest to you? Do they have the same sense of wonderment that your audience does, or are they more like, "whatever whatever, we've seen it all before"?

Brian: My friends have learned to be on their guard because something magical can happen at anytime. Whether it's a pop can refilling or a dollar bill floating they know to be ready at all times.

Malex: Nice... So, how do you find your gigs? I know from experience that it's hard enough finding gigs as a musician, and people generally 'get' music. I can only imagine that it must be harder to sell a magic act.

Brian: Well you're right about one thing: people don't get magic as much as music. What people do know is when they see magic. So my process in getting gigs is a little difficult. Usually I try to amaze a waiter, waitress or somebody who works at the restaurant by throwing them off guard with bending forks with my mind or floating a cup. From there they usually come talk to me and we sit down and have a talk with the manager and you all know where it goes from there.

Malex: Very nice... So what would you say to the poor, unfortunate child who is actually sitting at home saying, "Gee, I think I'd like to get into magic!" ?

Brian: (Disbelief) Unfortunate?

Malex: Um... Well, I didn't mean... Oh, I guess you know what I mean.

Brian: I guess... Anyway, I would say tell your parents to go to your local magic supplier. I know this sounds silly but you'd be surprised. There's usually one within an hour of where you live. Also read as much as you can on it. Last save your allowance... This is an art. Art is expensive. The better the illusion the more expensive it is.

Malex: So what about a random personal fact?

Brian: Remember everything I do is an illusion. Don't go trying any of my illusions that you see on your own. You may hurt yourself or ego.

Malex: Okay, everybody... One more announcement before we close today. Brian DeLay, The Shaman, magician extraordinaire, is joining the Malex Media Network as one of our newest artists!

Brian: W00t!

Malex: For those of us who previously knew Brian as "ghost magic", we've updated his screen name to reflect his performing alias.

Brian: If you want to see me, be sure to check out my blog for information on coming events, and for those who can't actually come out, look for upcoming episodes of my show that I'm going to be posting on the Malex Media Network site.

Malex: About when can we expect to see some of those?

Brian: Probably not anytime too soon, but keep an eye out right around early to mid fall.

Malex: Oh, and don't forget to visit our site at MalexMedia.Net to see a short video of amazing tricks that we're going to be attaching to this episode!

Brian: What? Video?

Malex: Thanks for listening to the Malex Minute Ladies and Gentlemen! Catch us next week, and see if I've been caught and pummeled yet!

We mention a video in the show; and rightly so, since we spent an hour or two filming one on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, when my family went on vacation, they took with them the only firewire cable at our house. Also, my internet connection is dead. So, my current plan is to buy a firewire cable while I'm out here, cut the video together, go back out to a WiFi-enabled restaurant, and upload the video from there.

So... just hang with me, and it'll all work out. :-D

If the definition of mass is an object's resistance to accelleration, and gravity is just a constant accelleration, shouldn't really massive objects just float?

Gee I hope I don't always sound that confused!

The Shaman's picture

OK so talking isn't really my thing. I get nervous and I forget what I'm saying. Get me a deck of cards or something to do with magic and I talk better. You'll see it on the video. My best tricks are when the magic speaks for itself. The last trick on the video you'll see what I'm talking about.

_______________

Magic is more than something that you see. Magic is something you feel. It's like the feeling you get when you hear that certain song or see that one person...that's real magic.

It's all good...

Malex's picture

It's all good... Talking into a microphone just isn't a natural thing for people to do. :-P

Oh, my home internet is back now, after some 24 hours of downtime...

I hope to have the video posted later today.

COOL

Japanese, right?

I have found that one of the hardest things, is walking when all you want to do is swim.

Yup...

Icepunk's picture

Yeah, it's Japanese kanji script but what does it say GFG?

Siggy -

No actual Icepunks were harmed in the making of this post.

ゴー (go XD)

It says Go Fly Girl at the top and the two new lines I added say genome screams.

---------------

ゴー 空を飛ぶ メッチェン

ゲノム

叫び声....

Slight improvement

jmglov's picture

You may want to change the last two lines to:

ゲノムが

叫び声

The が (ga) makes "genome" the subject. Otherwise, it sounds like a special attack from Parasite Eve: "Genome Scream!". :)

Ok.

I changed it ;D

ゴー 空を飛ぶ メッチェン

ゲノムが

叫び声

You're back! Welcome!

lol...

"Otherwise, it sounds like a special attack from Parasite Eve: 'Genome Scream!'."

I can only imagine how painful that would be. Like, it'd hurt so bad your ancestors would feel it.

--Alex Markley

If the definition of mass is an object's resistance to accelleration, and gravity is just a constant accelleration, shouldn't really massive objects just float?

Actually...

Its supposed to be read as Genome Scream... With genome as the subject....

yeah XD

GFG was referring to something from a while ago. It's a Liquid Nitrogen Gun.

Too critical

SangMing's picture

You sounded fine. Besides, you're a magician, not an orator, right? I can't wait to see your stuff and I enjoyed the interview.
