I have a quick question about the chatbox for the administrators(you know who you are):
Is the chatbox something you programmed from the top down especially for this site, or is it just an applet that connects to an IRC server or something of that kind? I just thought about that for the first time, and it would be great to chat without needing a web browser, such as when I'm on my DS![]()
Thanks!
Well
Malex might be better suited to answer this question, but two things I do know:
1) The chatbox was (I believe) a Drupal module written by a third party, definitely not specifically for this site.
2) It has many issues, and will hopefully be replaced with the new Chat Room (written by Malex!) eventually.
I know that’s not very helpful. Sorry.

That's fine! I was just looking for a way to bring all the zaniness to my pocket
BTW, most of this site loads really well in both of the homebrew DS web browsers that I use(some sites simply refuse to work for some reason, but this one works great). Unfortunately, in the homebrew so far cookies are only barely supported, and many sites, including this one, freeze the DS rather than allow me to log in. So I can't post
P.S. Malexmedia IRC? That would be scary!

Hehe
Well thank you for testing in your DS browser and giving feedback!
Sorry you can’t post… Oh well.

Chat {Box,Room}
Both modules, the (current) Chat Box and (my new and improved) Chat Room, are only web applications. They do not interface with another chat server. (I would kinda like to experiment with handling integration between my Chat Room and an XMPP conference server, but that's outside the scope of the work for now.)
So, sadly, you cannot use a dedicated chat client to chat in either chat room.
Also, cookies are such a basic concept on the Internet that I'm quite shocked to hear of a modern browser freezing when it encounters one. My site only uses one cookie for logging in, and it only contains a handful of bytes of information.
You may consider complaining to the tech support of whoever sold you the browser.

Boats
All I know is that the Chatboat will randomly toss people into the ocean and that the U.S.S. Chat is a hopeful dream that we all wish would one day become a reality.

Thanks Malex! That's a good example of the good and the bad about homebrew/open source software: They're free, but they sometimes don't work as well as they should.
With the cookies, it just has to do with the DS's limited capabilities... You actually have to manually allow cookies on sites you visit, and even then it doesn't often work. It seems to have something to do with how sophisticated the site is(and i get the impression Drupal is a very powerful system). I may at some point shell out the cash for the commercial web browser, which displays the pages as they would look on a computer and supports all images and all cookies(it's a port of Opera).
For now, I can do everything here except post. I even downloaded OpenMAZE straight to my DS, extracted the archive, and ran it in a Game Boy Color emulator.
