I have played Runescape and I hate it. It's fine while you're new and you have quests to do, and If you figure everything out for yourself it's fun and takes a little time. It's also fun to work on skills and be able to make better things for yourself, I made nearly everything I wanted so I had a bunch of money i never used. I also liked the background for the quests and the multiple towns you can run around in with different things in them and stories along with each. Also if you aren't a member there is still a large area you can run around in and lots of things to do and you can work on nearly all the available skills. I made alot of money mining and smithing (after I sold the armor i made) and then when I could make gold items I made alot of money on that as well and bought myself some nice Addy trimmed armor.
Another fun thing is random events. Either a bunch of frogs will show up and ask you to kiss their prince or princess and if you do they give you a token and you can get a prince or princess costume. Most of the events give you some pretty sweet clothing.
They recently updated the graphics and made the characters look nicer as well. I checked my character the other day and she was actually really pretty now that they updated it.
However, the faults outweigh the few good things about the game.
First there's the other people. When you're new to the game nearly everyone is willing to help you and at the very least be decent to you. But as time goes on and you reach higher levels you become a threat since after you finish all the quests the only other goal in the game is to become the best player in at least one or two things so that you can brag about it. But you dont have much time to sit in varrock square and brag because while you aren't doing anything some one else is trying to get your spot. So if you become a threat people are not nice at all and will find creative ways to get past the cuss filter.
And there's always the "Will you be my Gf or Bf" (girlfriend or boyfriend) So many people get on only to find someone to talk to. Its a breeding ground for bad people and weirdos who have no lives or real girlfriends. Among some of the weirdos are the people who get on and just want attention so they go to a heavily populated area and complain about their life and how everything sucks and everyone hates them.
There's also the private message feature, that you can turn off or to friends, but anyone can put you on their friends list and talk to you on private chat if you aren't careful. I've had some pretty foul things said to me on private chat.
Second is the waste of your life. Most of the things you do to get levels up are extremely time consuming but you cant, say, read a book while doing it because you have to click another rock or amulet or a different creature often enough that you can't do something else at the same time, unless, maybe, you have two computers and can work on your main account and your noob account at the same time. And if you get bored leveling up you can always hangout and show off. Which is as boring as leveling up only probably worse because someone is likely to think you a bigger jerk than them and yell at you for showing off.
It's a terrible game, don't waste your time like I did.

Alright. Here is my somewhat conflicting answer. I have never played Runescape. However, from what I have seen heard, and read, it does not sound like something I would want to waste my time with.
HOWEVER... I am at this moment helping to design an online RPG(which, while it lacks the crazily expensive graphics of Runescape, uses the same basic gameplay elements of any MMORPG, including Runescape). So, while denouncing Runescape as a waste of time, I am aiding and abetting the design of another game. Take it as you will...

I have never played Runescape. I don't know much about it, but I do know that I truly enjoy playing computer games occasionally. But by 'computer games' I mean like ones you buy. Myst or Nancy Drew. The cool thing about these games is that they're finite. You play till you win, then you're done. The game is over. That's a good thing for me, since I've been known to put everything on hold to play a game that I like. I've stayed up late (Really late) and skipped meals.
P.S. On a related topic, I don't think I have time to play Foppy's game anymore. I'm sad about that, but I must move on.
