The short funny one is from the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams, and the long funny one is from The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul, also by Douglas Adams.
I really like his books, though he is an athiest, so the books get a bit off-color at times.
