Malex's picture

Well...

"I was saying that THIS version needs changed, on a drastic scale. Its to simple for my liking."

Well, there are two things:

1) The system.

The features are simple, that I'll grant. However, this system offers things that no other system offers - it just presents them in a slightly unconventional way.

Ultimately, there are three system-related things to consider: ease of use, features, and integration.

As for ease of use, the system needs to be extremely accessable. Everything they need to begin interacting should be only a click or two away. I've never seen another forum package that offers that.

As for features, I was not aware of any major features that your average forum provides that we're not duplicating here. If you have a specific feature-related suggestion, please let me know.

The other thing is that most setups completely neglect integration when they're putting together a website. If we were to use another forum package, such as phpBB, here is what would happen:

-> Users would need two logins - one for the main site and one for the forum.

-> We would be unable to present all of our content in one consistant interface.

-> Admins would lose a lot of control and flexibility when it comes to content. (For example, promoting a forum topic to the front page takes a single click.)

-> Users would be unable to reply to other items on the site in a consistent manner. If there was any commenting capability at all, it would be confusingly different from the forum to the main site.

-> Our user base would be completely different from the site to the forum. We would have a number of users who only registered for one and not the other - effectively creating second-class citizens within the realm of the MMN.™ We don't need that kind of rift. (Not to mention that it would be hard to recognize users from one system to the other.)

These are only a few of the problems we encountered when we had a seperate forum. (Does anybody here remember that? Gee, it was such a long time ago...)

So, as far as the system itself goes, I feel confident in Drupal's ability to power social interaction at any level that we feel would be healthy for this community. I'm confident in my ability to add whatever features I feel would be good for the site. Thus, I am not (now, or in the forseeable future) interested in transitioning to another content management framework.

2) The theme.

As for the theme, we've struggled long and hard on it. Believe me, it's not an easy task to create a theme that fits our requirements. Depending on who you ask, we've even managed to scare away graphic designers just by showing them our requirements. :-P

For example, if you make a really flashy, sleek, and eye-catching theme, will all the images take forever to load for dial-up users? Will the page validate as XHTML Strict? Will the overall layout be tableless? Will users who visit the site every day get tired of the theme and find it to be an eyesore? (Yes, the more stylized the theme is, the larger percentage of people simply won't like it.) If your theme is vaguely Sci-Fi, would it go well with an emotional drama? (After all, the Malex Media Network™ has aspirations of publishing all manner of art and media - including stuff that might completely clash with highly-stylized themes.)

So the current theme is designed to meet all of our currently-known requirements by me - a programmer and a musician, not a graphic designer.

I guess it would be alright for anyone who was interested to design a theme and submit it, keeping in mind the requirements I mentioned. Of course, I would be willing to answer questions and etc., but I wouldn't guarantee to use it. ;)

I went to your forum, but it gave me trouble. Or rather, I didn't belong there. First, the contrast of the letters to the background was so optically disturbing, that I wasn't able to read anything until I enlarged the font twice.

Also, I didn't know what to click t get to anything. Obviously, your forum is geared to an audience that does NOT include me. :-)

The State of Things

"and the minimail system to send Private Messages to certain members" --Rufas Shinra

"I love the layout, I just wish for PMing..." --Go Fly Girl

Okay, PMing is now available. However, it is enabled for each user on a user-by-user basis, and is disabled by default. Thus, if you want to send a user a private message, they have to make sure their contact form is enabled in their profile. This is because any potential for a user to be contacted without their express permission is a privacy violation, and I will do everything in my power to avoid it at all costs.

Furthermore, we are not doing an inbox here at the site. Why? I can't count the number of times I've come back to a forum after a few months to find an urgent message in my PM box.

Obviously, this is unacceptable. If a user has agreed to allow personal contact, and a message must be delivered, it will be delivered to the user's regular email address.

Of course, that user's email address remains unexposed until they reply, which is completely up to them. ;)

You will find the personal contact form in a tab on a user's profile page if they have enabled it.

"the COMMENT type topics are throwing me off...alot. although that is inly because I'm used to threads..." --Rufas Shinra

Could you clarify this point? If you're saying that you don't like the threaded comment display style, I don't blame you. It's very different from every other forum around.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

* Historically, the MalexMedia.Net site inherited a lot of topic and conversation data from an old CMS called geeklog. It wasn't community-oriented, but what comments there were were stored in a threaded manner.

* Second, threaded commenting is technically more powerful than flat, because it can preserve conversational threads which can be untangled later to decypher conversational context. (Of course, this only works if the user understands the threading concept, but let's not get into that. ) :-P

Anyway, due to those two things, I made a conscious decision to avoid the flat commenting and go with threading.

Now, I am aware that threaded comments can be harder to follow at first. Because of that, we even experimented with flat comments for a while. However, that idea was abandoned because of the sheer chaos that would follow such a change.

"there is no ranking sustem or post count on here" --Rufas Shinra

User Ranking systems in a situation such as ours only serve to create an artificial divide (or even worse, a caste system) between the members of the community. Our goal is to unite artist and audience, so why would we go for a system that would divide people up into ranks?

Finally, post counts infuriate me. They serve to encourage flooding and/or spamming, which means that meaningful conversation can be discouraged. I do like for us to have a degree of "randomness" and otherwise-meaningless funny banter, but actively encouraging it is unwise. (This is not to mention the fact that post counts can serve to divide people the same way ranking can.)

So I hope I've made my position a little less enigmatic. There is a reason for everything.

It's complex

Think of the thread like a tree structure. You reply to something specific, and it will appear at the next level down - as a child to the thing you replied to.

The confusion comes in when you create all kinds of neat and complex tree structures by having a very non-linear conversation. :) (Or if someone simply doesn't understand the idea and breaks the tree accidentally.) ;)

I like the setup for its power, even though it's noted for being difficult to "get the hang of" at first.

Like I said...

There are hundreds of reasons why that might happen without it being a glitch.

For example, anonymous users get cached versions of all pages. (That means that you get old data unless you've logged in.) Which could easily cause this problem for you.

If you really think there's a bug going on, I need you to to explain it more clearly, and possibly email me some screenshots. 'Cause at the moment, it seems to me that you're just having trouble with the complexities of this site's day-to-day operation.

I Discovered that it was the cookies on my comp. they would not update along with the site.
