Ah, summer. It's upon us people. But you hardly need me to tell you that, as you all slip off discreetly on your summer vacations leaving the Malex Media Network looking like an hour old carcass in ninety degree heat.
But what is summer I ask you? For working people it's traditionally a time of air conditioning, at the home and in the car. It's also, traditionally, the best time to sight that rare creature known as your child, either sitting zoned at the computer or at the TV. Oops, sorry. That was my pessimistic side getting in a jab about the condition of America today. Pay him no mind. ![]()
Around my house summer is a completely different beast. Out with the hours of homework and in with the hours of yardwork and housework. Vegging on the computer or at the TV is simply not an option here, since the air conditioning unit is too small for our house and those electronics can and will overheat sometime this summer. It can also be hard to do this when your stay-at-home mother doesn't want you to.
I love you ma.
Most people see the summer outdoors as a place of sunlight, birdsong, and lush green leaves. But at our house we have all that and more. Smart people will come outside here and see it as a war zone, littered with sunburn and mosquito bite victims. Silly people will come outside here and become one of those victims.
The air around here can go anywhere in that wide variety between extremely humid and only very humid. Yes, at all times here walking outside is like walking into a sauna. Except for at night, when walking outside is like walking into a crazy over decorative person's house on Halloween. If anyone ever tells you that summer is boring they're mad. Completely mad.
Yes, summer around here can be pretty interesting. I thought this summer would be a peaceful summer, where I sat down and wrote my book. But then I was rudely reminded that I live in a house with so many other people, who all have more free time on their hands and who all want to do something with me. Did I say summer can be interesting? Hectic is really more the word. Hectic.
Free time?
Summer interesting? I’m busy not spreading myself too thin here so that I can focus and make my summer productive. Not because it’s any different or more invigorating than winter, but precisely because it isn’t any different in terms of how much needs done.
For me those are the key words: “Not spreading myself too thin.”

Opposite problem
I have a ton of time when i'm not doing anything and I've been trying to work on my book but i'm stuck, again. But my schedule for next year is really messed up and the only way i can get all the classes in that i need to graduate is to take one of them now. And once they start i won't be finished until the day before i leave for Scotland. XP

Yeah, that just gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside like the world is crushing down on my head. Thanks.

I know I gotta geta job...
I'll let you guys know how my life is then. Right now I kinda hava job taking pictures for a magazine, good pay but it leaves me bored because I'm freelancing. I dont have to take a picture for an article but I do if I want money. And I gotta find scholarships this summer, continue my psych studies, take a few college tests, put up the pool....aggh. For homeschoolers especially it seems summer is a more hectic time than during the school year. Anyway I'll pray for you guys and you pray for meh, kk?

I have the impression that it’s less whether you’re homeschooled or not and more whether you’re working toward and investing time toward your future. I think the only teenagers who “get a break” from life in the summertime are those who don’t have much of one in the first place - like the kind who spend all their time playing video games or something.

Ahh...summer!
I love summer. I SO look forward to the time when I can do a LOT of yard/housework. This is the only time of my year that I can be productive in ways that show. The rest of the time I'm trying to teach the kids, and while that's the most important thing in my life, it doesn't seem to show. So I often fall under the delusion that I'm slacking.
It's also the only time that I can take a little time out to read or swim or shop or visit friends that I don't feel terribly guilty for it.
Foppy, that was SO funny! Especially the first paragraph. It had me laughing out loud in the old sense - literally!

I posted a comment on this string, but I guess that the site ate it....Darn!
Nice wit, Foppy! I liked the first paragraph too!
