Pictures From the Party. Also, VOTE!
They're a tad late in coming, but here are some pictures from the party. Be sure to also watch the video!
So recently I haven't been doing all that much posting or updating on the site. That is to say, new things have been coming out, (like the Malex Minute) but the site itself hasn't been updated hardly at all recently.
It's not that I don't see the cruft, and it's certainly not that I'm neglecting the site. In fact, I have a list of updates that need made about as long as my whole body. (Literally. My brother can testify to this.)
I've even made great progress on the new site in the past year. So you might ask why you haven't seen any new updates? The reason is because I was hoping to work on the new site behind closed doors for a while and suddenly unveil everything at once - like magic.
However, I don't think that method is going to work.
First, the task is becoming too huge, so it's going to take a very long time for me to "finish" everything. (Especially since nothing is ever truly finished.) Second, although that method might ultimately work, I'm afraid the lack of updates and general staleness is going to eventually chase everybody right off the site.
So I've been considering wrapping up some loose ends and launching the new site "as-is" in a few weeks. It wouldn't be all I'd hoped for, but it would be something... And although there would be a few months (or six months, or a year) of obvious "under construction"-ness, it would allow you guys to see (and critique) what I'm working on.
You could be more directly involved in my work, make suggestions, and help me improve this place a lot. And frankly, I think that's closer to what the Malex Media Network® is about: Community rather than corporation. Incremental improvements rather than flashy unveilings.

I have trouble imagining what "under construction -ness" might look like on the site or affect me personally. But I'm willing to try it. After all, I have a sense of adventure. And you've never let us down here on the site before, Malex. I trust you.
The pics are great, BTW. It's good to see everyone, and be reminded of how much fun we had.

Also, at Malex, I think you should set up a "public beta" site for the members to play around with and feel for a bit to see if they like it before making it live...

In all pictures that I am in, there is something squarely in front of my face or something so you can never see me. In fact, one picture is very clearly me thwomping Foppy and his Euchre partner but you can't see me!

Public Beta

Well, I will definitely be inviting a few close friends to inspect my work before we do the big cutover. However, I will not be doing any sort of public beta.
Since the database schema that powers the site needs an upgrade as well, the two codebases will need separate databases. Thus, if we have two versions of the site available, they'll start to get out of sync from one another practically from minute one.
It would be a confusing mess, and even I wouldn't be able to untangle it.
Also, I don't like announcing temporary URLs, because once they become invalid it only causes more confusion.
