Happy Thanksgiving!

Crazy J's picture

But i'm not just going to post "Happy Thanksgiving" and leave it at that. Don't you know there's more to this holiday than eating turkey and gravy?

Seriously. This is a truely special holiday for Christians; almost as special as Christmas. It has a great spiritual meaning for us.

While it's mostly glossed over these days, Thanksgiving was initially created as a day to remember when the Pilgrims and other early settlers and how through the grace of God they survived. Literally, it was about being thankful to god for being able to survive to and in the new world.

These days, the context has changed some, but the principle is still the same. We need to be thankful to God for sending his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for us and our sins. But there's other things we can be thankful for; we can be thankful for all our troops who are fighting and dying to give us the right to celebrate this holiday, for example. That's one thing i'm very much grateful for.

This Thanksgiving, don't just loaf around, eating pie and hollowly say a few trivial things that come off the top of your head to be thankful. Take a look at your Bible and be reminded of what God did for us, and what Jesus did for us, and be thankful for that. Find something to be truely grateful for, like our dear friend Icepunk, out in Germany, serving our armed forces.

But please, don't just snarf some food and say some generic, meaningless thing to be thankful for. I'll track you down and get medieval on your tuchis.

Yeah

And like how God blesses the Christian with a growing, healing relationship.

Wow, J

What a cool post. Thank you for this reminder. You're right, of course. We in this country have so very much to be thankful for that we tend to take it for granted. Our physical needs are met immediately. But the Pilgrims were coming off a time of unbelievable trial during which most of their number perished. Yet even in those circumstances, giving thanks to God was foremost in their minds. How very ungrateful we are by comparison.

I am blessed by my children. I'm so very grateful that I've had the privilege of keeping them home with me for their schooling. Life is so sweet and I have such a joyful life!! To God be the glory!!

I agree

I can't stand the way commercialization has blurbed over Thanksgiving, bleeding Christmas into it so as to milk more money from people. This year, it seems especially bad!

Let's just skip the being thankful and go straight to gimme! :-|

Thanksgiving Day

I'm so glad that America has an actual official day set aside for the giving of thanks to our Creator and Sustainer for all of the wonderful things that we enjoy. Marred as it is by commercialization and by the antics of the ever-present "religious diversity" crowd, we still have this holiday. We must cherish it and defend it for as long as we can!

nice post,

the gnome has had many thanksgiving days this year and they had nothing to do with food...

It doesn't stop being magic just because you learn how it's done.

Name a shrub after me...something prickly and hard to eradicate.
