State of the Onion Address

Malex's picture

Things are afoot! If you ever use MalexMedia.Net™ or its associated services, this news post applies to you!

I've mentioned before that I'm currently working on a number of major new changes to MalexMedia.Net.™ These changes will ultimately alter the overall look, feel, organization, and capabilities of the web site.

Even with all the major overhauling I'm doing, I really only have two overarching goals: 1) Make MalexMedia.Net™ and all associated services easier to use. 2) Increase the capabilities of the Malex Media Network's™ media distribution services for our Client Services as well as our own internal projects. (This goal has two main subgoals: Add Features and Improve Scalability.)

At this point, I need everyone who uses this site to come up with a wishlist of things they want to see. The more people mention something, the more likely I am to actually work on it.

Here's the current list of things I'm planning to do in no particular order:

* I've already coded major improvements to the chat room. Complete rewrite and hundreds of new features. (Post ideas about the chat room and I'll confirm if they're already done or likely to happen, etc.)

* The new MalexMedia.Net™ will have a full-featured private message system. Let me know if you have any questions about this specifically.

* Channels at the new MalexMedia.Net™ will be much easier to navigate. When viewing a Splicky Mission, Malex Minute episode, etc., you'll be able to simply click "Previous" or "Next" to see other media from that series! (This is personally one of my highest priorities. It should make the user experience much smoother.)

* Media Nodes on the new MalexMedia.Net™ should be MUCH cleaner in their appearance and organization. Details aren't yet hammered down, but I'm planning on reducing the amount of overall clutter on the page in order to make better use of the screen real estate we have. (For example, information about the media will appear in a block to the right, with downloads appearing in a block immediately below that, etc.) In addition, I'm hoping to have some fields (such as the Transcript in Malex Minute episodes) collapse on page load, so they are only visible if the user explicitly wants to see them.

* I'm planning to CLOSE the MalexMedia.Net™ Store. It will no longer be a confusing, cancerous tumor on the main MalexMedia.Net™ site. It will eventually be replaced with a completely separate shopping cart which should be much simpler and easier to use. However, there's no telling how long that transition will take, so you should get your orders in while you can! (This cancerous tumor might be confusing, but at least it works!)

* To reflect the new organization of the site, I will be launching a private advertising network which we will use to internally promote products, services, projects, and anything else we feel like promoting. In addition, screened, third-party advertising will show up on this ad network from sponsors and partners who have paid a small fee for the privilege. This internal ad network will completely replace the Google Ad banner on MalexMinute.com.

* SermonMP3s.com sermons will no longer appear here at MalexMedia.Net,™ despite being published by the Malex Media Network™ for SermonMP3s.com customers. This means that you won't find sermons clogging up the recent posts page or the various audio pages.

* Speaking of SermonMP3s.com services, customers of SermonMP3s.com will have the option of Searching & Sorting in their sermon tables. This will allow their visitors to find exactly what they're looking for without paging through hundreds of sermons. (If you're interested in SermonMP3s.com or have suggestions for features which would benefit SermonMP3s.com customers, please contact me directly.)

Many of the things on this list are either far along in the planning stages or actually finished in my laboratory environment. However, none of the new changes will show up here until they are all ready to go.

Don't forget to post a wishlist of ideas for me to work on! Even if you see your favorite idea on this list, mention it anyway!

Ads

Malex's picture

Well, this is something we're going to ease into. I'm not planning on having anything that's too incredibly obtrusive or in the way. It's also hard to say if there will be third-party ads on MalexMedia.Net™ proper or if they'll just be on the "other" sites.

I should also point out that we're NOT going to be having ads like Google or Project Wonderful, etc. where it's just a chaotic jumble of advertising. There will only be ads which I (or one of my team) have specifically approved. Ads from companies who specifically want to market to us because they think we're a valuable market. (It says a lot when a company is willing to pay for banners by the CPM instead of by the clicks, and that's how we'd be doing it.)

So no popups, popunders, popovers, or poptarts. At worst we're talking one or two banners for some random products which rotate along with our internal MalexMedia.Net ads.

Sadly, working for free isn't an option when you're an adult, and I'm no exception. :-\

Of course, I don't want this to be the end of the discussion, those are just my thoughts. What do you guys think of this admittedly big move?

Hmm'eh

Well ok, I suppose, I just hate ads with great intensity... And they scare me.. a lot... and usually when a site starts getting ads it begins to get cluttered... then over time you try to go to the page and get a comatose from all the ads (reference Neopets.com, when i was little and played it, there were absolutely no ads, it got to the point and i enjoyed playing it. Over time they began 'playing' with small ads in the sidebar, mostly internal Neopets ads and at that point the Neopet staff promised that it wouldn't get any worse than the small sidebar ad, but yeah... it got worse and worse... now if you try to load it there is at least three HUGE ads on each page most haveing nothing to do with neopets, some with rollovers and popovers and sound.... now, I absolutely despise even going to Neopets when it used to actually be a good site.)

Now i wouldn't mind them on the "other" sites, but i believe that putting ads here on MalexMedia.net, which is the general main portal, would look unprofessional... and cluttered... and ads really bother me on a page that i refresh a lot (here)...

But, it's your business and your call, so if you think it would be for the best, then yeah....

Sorrehs if im ranting but ads generally make me feel like slamming my face into the KB....

..

Sorry >_<

"I just hate ads with great intensity..." --Go Fly Girl

I actually have a big aversion to ads myself. And I always thought it would be rockin' to have a sweet website and a big audience and no ads whatsoever.

However, where's the money going to come from?

I mean, I know it sounds bad to be talking about money, but let's be realistic. For one thing, living costs a lot of money. And I like living. (And besides, if I wasn't living this would all be a moot point, but now we're solidly in the realm of the tangential.)

But here's the real kicker. This website costs me money. On the order of $150 / month. And that's not including any of the constant manual labor and maintenance keeping it running. That's just for the server and the hosting. (And also, keep in mind that about 2/3 of our hosting is still being done by volunteers for free!)

So we're not just talking about some happy funtime that I and my brothers do in our spare time for fun, we're talking about an active financial burden.

It's not a lot of money from a profitable business perspective, but this isn't a profitable business!

At least, not yet.

Again, I really hate to sound like a businessman, and I hate to sound desperate. We've been paying the bills (largely due to God's incredible grace) and I'm not saying that things need to change in the next five seconds or the world's going to explode.

Still, we have to be realistic: MalexMedia.Net™ has to hit a critical mass of profitability at some point or it's not going to be possible to continue.

So now we come full circle: I don't like ads either, so that's why I'm opening the floor for discussion... Can we realistically be profitable without advertising?

The only thing I dislike more than advertising is donations, so that's out. And people just won't pay for access to content online. Unless I'm missing something, the only remaining source of potential profit is sale of merchandise, and that requires a much larger audience than we have. (Not to even mention the start-up capital to produce product.)

My thoughts on the matter are this: We need to make these sites as valuable as they can possibly be. That means keeping the advertising spaces down to one or two banners at most so they don't turn people off, and sustaining the largest possible audience.

But at this point I'm just repeating myself.

Maybe...

Quartz's picture

Maybe we just need to balance our dislike for ads with the necessity for money, by screening the ads, making most of them ours, and keeping them as organized and as unobtrusive as possible. :?

Excited!

Quartz's picture

I'm really liking the ideas of the new MalexMedia.Net.™ :D Especially all the fresh graphics I get to make! Some of the graphics on here now are really stale, because I was new at SVG graphics back when I made them. But now I feel confident that I can make graphics with a new, long-lasting professionalism, while silumtaneously making them attractive. :)

For example, the MMN logo in the top-left. None of the gradients match up with the object they're supposedly giving shape to, so the overall effect is to make the MMN look bubbly and weird... My new skills with SVG combined with new SVG features make totally fixing that logo a trivial task!

"I need to get that Inkscape... OH! Quartz, you wouldn't happen to know where I can get c4d or a free remake of it?(like GIMP is to Photoshop)" -Rufas Shinra

Hmm... Well, I've never heard of C4D before, but I do know of a few free 3D computer graphics programs. Mostly what we use here at the Malex Media Network™ is actually POVRay, but that's a script-based raytracer, not a 3D modeler.

The only free 3D modeler I know of is Blender3D. I gather most people find Blender3D difficult to use for a 3D modeler. I think it's something of a reject program, if you will. XD The company that made it went out of business, and the OpenSource community bought it from them, you see.

But some people might still find it easier to use than a script language, like POVRay. Besides, the two applications don't replace each other in function - POVRay can do some things Blender3D can't, and vice versa.

And yes, as Mariel 7 pointed out, Inkscape and GIMP are both free 2D graphics programs - Inkscape is a 2D vector image editor, and GIMP is a raster image manipulation program.

I hope this helps... :D

By the way, as a matter of interest, one of the only ways Blender3D does animation is by keyframes, as far as I know. POVRay, however, provides such simple animation capabilities that it's incredibly flexible. As long as you can deal in algebra, you can do almost anything with POVRay's animation, within reason. :D

In fact, I've done a bit with pairing POVRay together with the C programming language to create a "Keyclock" program. The idea is, you enter values similar to keyframes, only instead of picking frames in the animation you pick values of "clock", a variable that represents the duration of your animation. Then my program, Keyclock, would take those values you enter and do the algebra for you. It would print it to a POVRay script file, and then you could just plug it into your POVRay scene. Ideally you'd have the most control in the easiest way. :D

However, I'm still developing this program, and I don't know that it won't be a very long time before I get a chance to do anything with it again.

"STATE OF THE ONION, MY EYE"

Mariel 7's picture

YAY!!!! The chatbox is finally going to work right!!!!! Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!

My biggest complaint about the site as is, is the 'Online User' box. Whenever someone leaves the chatbox, I can't be sure if they left the site completely or not. When I refresh, the online user box will say the same people are on, even if they left 20 minutes previously. I'm not sure why this is (maybe it's one of the numerous IE problems X-| ) but if it's fixable ... please do :-)

As you said, the ads are essential even if they're ugly and thensome. The important thing is keeping a lid on the number of ads (to avoid the Neopets bug), but since you don't really want them anyway (and half of us know where you live (:) ) that shouldn't be any problem at all.

I kinda like the online store, in some incarnation. I admit it's hard to use (especially since bitpass closed) but I think we need some way to order products, etc ... Speaking of which, one of my friends {MusicLover} wants a "Demon Potato" sticker that she saw on the shop but I didn't know if you still had any ... do you? ;-)

Ah

Malex's picture

Yes, I do indeed have some demon potato stickers available. Let me know and I can pass one along (through whoever, however, whatever...)

As for the "online users" box, I'm afraid that's irreparably broken. (It's not even based on sound theory.) So when it says, "Online users", it really just means, "Users who have loaded a page from this site any time in the last 20 minutes."

And even that's a little questionable...

Malex, it would be totally

Noble Wisdom's picture

Malex, it would be totally awesome if all of the media (audio, games, images, videos, etc) were not simply posted according to the date they were...well, posted. I have to slough through a lot of stuff to find what I want when I go looking through the media archives. Isn't there a better way to organize things? For instance, to be able to click a button and see all JUST Malex minute episodes, or to click on a button and see all JUST Malex music, and to have music and videos and other media further sorted by artist/producer, etc. That would be great!!

Also, Marial 7, I noticed that your new sig is a pic of Ms. Kouru. That is soooo cool! Where did you find out about Rorouni Kenshin? I LOVE that show!! I love it almost as much as I love DBZ. It's sooooo good. I love the morals, the values, the messages presented by the show (just like DBZ), and it is soooo funny!!

Taxonomy

Malex's picture

"For instance, to be able to click a button and see all JUST Malex minute episodes, or to click on a button and see all JUST Malex music" --Noble Wisdom

Well, I'll be the first to admit that the organization here is sub-optimal, but you can accomplish all of the things you just mentioned.

For example, here are all the Malex Minute episodes, here is all Malex Music, here you will find all art which Quartz had a hand in, all the art Fopsworth had a hand in, etc.

If you're ever at a page (a Malex Minute episode, for example) and you're interested in other pages which are similar, look at the "Categorization" links for direct links to every related category. (The "Categorization" links appear just beneath the page title and the "Submitted by..." line.)

That should be a very good way to sort through things that you're looking for. And don't forget that not only can you bookmark your favorite categories, but if you're looking for something and really having trouble finding it, you can always use the search page.

Finally, if there's a particular category which seems like it should exist, but doesn't yet, please suggest it! It's fairly easy to add categories to the system, and making sure things are categorized well is part of making things easy to find.

Does this help at all? :)

As for me...

SangMing's picture

I must confess to total ignorance of anime. A lot of people have tried to explain it to me over the years and I've come away no wiser.

Back in the olden days, when I was a cartoon-watching-age child, we (my friends and relatives of roughly the same age) all HATED the few examples of what would one day be known as anime that we had opportunity to see. Speed Racer and King Kong come to mind. Some of the youngest kids in our group (the younger brothers of real members of our group) liked these travesties, but we despised them and found them impossible to relate to in any way or even tolerate looking at.

I still have a really hard time understanding the draw. Assuming that the animation style is here to stay, I'll also assume that the interest lies in the story lines or story telling styles. I'm also sure that anime is much, much cheaper to produce than real animation and therefore will continue to be a staple of television entertainment for a long time to come.

On the other hand, I'm really not a good critic. I just have a really sour relationship with television, not having watched any tv to speak of in at least 20 years.

Uggh, Speed Racer ... King Kong ... ULTRAMAN!!!!!!!!! *dies of horribleness*

I still have a really hard time understanding the drawing.

Funny story. The style for anime actually originated in AMERICA! What became known as Anime was actually a blending of Japanese styles with the style of western masterpieces like Disney's "Cinderella". The features are extremely exaggerated, but the 'small eyes, small mouth, big eyes' thing is there. Also, you'll notice that most of the characters in anime are actually caucasian.

I'm also sure that anime is much, much cheaper to produce than real animation

*anime hackles rising* Anime is real animation :-|

(if such a thing exists :-J )

I'll asume you mean stop animation (Speed Racer and Pokemon)... yes, that is very crappy and fortunately is used much less, if at all.

On the other hand, I'm really not a good critic ... not having watched any tv to speak of in at least 20 years.

It's ok. I'll say that anime is much, much better than it was 20 years ago (thank goodness X-D ) other wise it would hurt to watch. Can't say much for other tv though X-|

Thanks for letting me vent a bit there. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, but I just wanted to get that off my chest as it were. Thanks a lot Mariel, for helping to explain some things about anime. I have noticed that most of the characters in the few examples of anime I've seen appear to be western, but even the ones that are stated to be Japanese look western to me.

I still have a really hard time understanding the drawing.

My original quote here was that I don't understand the draw. Maybe I was employing an outdated phrase. What I don't understand is the attraction of anime. Why would anyone like it? I still don't understand that. But at least I'm kind of getting used to it. :-D

Mariel 7

Noble Wisdom's picture

Yes, Mariel 7, I know what you are talking about with the DBZ manga. It's not very clean. However, the English-dubbed anime versions have been edited, and there is NOTHING offensive about them. Basically, they take out all the unnecessary swearing and exaggerated gore, and leave in all the REALLY GOOD parts. You really should watch some of it. It gets even better as the episodes progress. I especially like its parallels to the story of Christ--as in there is a "savior of the world" who is good and fights against evil...and I mean truly good. He's not one of those "Goody guys who does bad things" kind of characters. I also love the way they emphasize family ties and the importance of family. There are a lot of really good moral lessons. And they don't say things like "just believe in yourself," and stupid stuff like that. They lay down right and wrong in concrete. Yeah. If you can't tell, I REALLY LIKE DBZ. Can't stand the original Dragon Ball, though.

Oooooo, just saw Rorouni Kenshin for the first time ever at the beginning of this month. It totally rocks!! I've seen most of the episodes (especially since there are only like 98 of them or something). I agree with everything you said about it. It's great!

Questions

Mariel 7's picture

How many episodes have you seen so far. Just season 1. 2? 3? Season 1 and 2 are actually based on the manga (vs. 3 which was written by the producer-people). Season 1 is the best and it's amazingly funny (1-30). Season 2 is good (31-69); it's all one big epic quest/battle. Very good. Season 3 was ... crappy ... and wierd/spiritualist (one of the things I really loved about the manga was that it never went there :-| )

Also, new anime siggy :-* ... What makes it funny was that Kaoru was using Sano as her target :-D X-D (:)

they get her drunk

It always seemed so funny in the movies. And it makes for a great plot device. Someone gets someone else drunk either to play a trick on them or to get them to do something they wouldn't else wise. Really funny.

Until a boy I know was actually talking about doing it to one of his friends.

Suddenly you remember that stuff you learned in health class about how, by the time a drinker's judgment is severely impaired or they're loosing consciousness, they're in danger of dying.

I dunno. I guess I don't mean to preach or anything. It's just that ever since I heard someone talking like they'd really do it, I've had a hard time finding it funny.

yeah,

I know drinking isn't funny in real life. The reason it's funny in RK is because Ms. Kaoru can't hold liquor, at all :-(| . So the guys gave her a really big beer :-(| in hopes that it would knock her out and they could get the ring Kenshin accidentally gave her back :-(| . But she just got really angry 0_0 ... and confused @-D . It's a good episode, but not great (it's part of the abysmal season 3 >:-( (:) X-| , but it's a filler episode so it's ok :-) )

If anyone's interested here it is A B

(P.S. Tanabata Day is the Japanese equivalent of Valentine's Day)

I'm not sure which episode you've seen, NW. But, this is the very end of the Kyoto episodes with Shishio. I found it while I was looking for the other episode. It's one of my favorites; very funny and romantic and kinda cute and sad.

Episode 62: A B C

PS. I can't find the episode my quote is from on youtube: it's episode 17

Yes, I did see that

Noble Wisdom's picture

Yes, I did see that episode...it was good, but to be honest, my fave episodes are the "fillers," the ones that do not pertain to the overall story arc, but are just there for fun, and reveal a lot about the characters and their relationships to one another. I like those. The other ones are good, too, and necessary to provide a structure for the series. LOL, I love the one when Sanoske and Yahiko sneak around following the girls while they're shopping, because they think the girls are going to eat food without them...and you know that if there is one thing that is always on Sanoske's mind, it is FOOD! Lol, I liked that episode.

w00t for fillers

Mariel 7's picture

yeah, the episode's great. How bout the one where they ride on a train and get their pictures taken (cutting edge technology), but Sano, the fearless, is absolutely terrified of both. After all everyone knows that pictures suck your soul. Actually, in the ending episode I posted you can see Sano scared outta his wits by a train ... heh heh heh heh heh :-O X-|

I know!! He thinks that

Noble Wisdom's picture

I know!! He thinks that trains are moved by ghosts! "There's no way this thing can move all by itself," he says X-D . And isn't it true that when the others try to tell him that the train is powered by coal, he thinks it's ghosts who shovel the coal? Or something like that?? He just can't be reasoned with, lol!!

I always thought it was interesting how there is this little romance thing going on between Sano and Miss Megumi...I was sad that the series ended before I could see what became of it...

Asian "ghosts"

SangMing's picture

I read a book once (actually several times) called China Boy by Gus Lee. **WARNING** The book contains bad language, but I think it's free of truly adult content. It's a very funny/poignant story of a Chinese boy growing up with a caucasion stepmother in a black neighborhood. But the boy's descriptions of his late Chinese mother's vague understandings of how things worked in modern (1950's) America were hilarious. She had respect for the 'gods' of the lights and the refrigerator. Especially the refrigerator because it produced ice cubes - something she had never seen before.

I recommend the book for any of you who are old enough to deal with the swearing and sometimes gritty violence, and the inherent sadness of the boy's situation in life.

My personal favorite

SangMing's picture

The tooth god. The mom was trying to understand why a fairy (which translates the same as 'god' in Chinese) would want to take people's teeth in the night. She made her son try to sleep with his mouth shut!
