New Emoticons!
We have installed the new emoticons:
There they are! Malex discussed in his blog how we're going to move to a new system, and this is a step toward that! So the emoticons will hopefully fit even better with the rest of the site's look & feel when we move everything else!
What do you guys think? Do you like them as much as the old ones? Do they look ill or anything? Can you see them well?

I'm actually quite excited by the new emoticons. Not only were they created in-house, but I feel that they more accurately represent the color scheme we've got going on.
You'll also notice that they've changed since the last time we showed them off. We took the feedback you gave us and applied it, so please let us know what you think!

I love them, Quartz! I really like the new color. That was my major complaint with the old ones - the color. They are very visible for my old eyes, and terribly cute. My favorites are these:

That was actually quite intentional. You see, the images are bigger than the text in most cases. (You can see this quite starkly if you highlight a bit of text that includes an emoticon.) Thus, in order to fit them into the lines of text, you need to widen the space between lines a bit to make room. But that was very ugly, and caused a little ambiguity when it came to such things as paragraph distinction, and it all-around made the text confusing to look at (all in subtle ways, of course). If you look, I'm sure you'll be able to see even still a slightly bigger gap on this
line because of the emoticon I just slipped in.
Anyway, making the emoticons smaller helped with that problem a bit. See?
That was a major reason that it was such a concern whether they were easy to see or not.

Actually, that's almost exactly it! It shows the very idea/emotion/expression we were looking for. Of course, you see, looking at the ways in which it's often used, and the ways it's most likely to be used, it would probably be more like... he's about to get hit by the train of social unacceptability, or... the train of domestic horror, or... the train of shock value taken too far or something, etc. But it's pretty much the same emotion.

I like 'em, too! I like the color a lot. And some of them are more expressive, more detailed, than the old ones. It is nice to see them matching the color scheme of the rest of the site. Way to go, Quartz! And Malex!

As for the "run their wee legs off" Quatrz ... When you have to deal with a large group of children, sometimes the only thing you really can do with them is to get them up and moving (preferrably at high speeds) and wait for them to drop.
